I’m Payal Desai, an Indian, currently residing in Hong Kong. I am a freelance editor, specialized in developmental and line-editing. I have done Post Graduation (MA) in German language and literature. The primary focus of this website is to provide developmental and line editing services. But its engagement with the authors doesn’t end there.
The logo of this website is ‘For Your Fiction’, and as its name suggest, it is created to support the fiction writers in each step of the way starting from the first draft to ready to publish book, and it goes one step further by representing and promoting their work on social media platforms. In the blog section of this website, you’ll find my views about writing, editing, book marketing, and the issues and roadblocks of indie-authors.
Ever since I remember myself I have been an introvert, living in the world of characters and stories. I did my Masters in German Language and Literature– studied Goethe, Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, Schiller and many more profound authors of their times. But after completed my Post graduation I moved toward corporate life; worked more than nine years in IT & BPO firms as German language expert, Team manager and Project management Office.
In May 2015, my sister Kirtida Gautam self-published the review copy of her first Novel “#Iam16Ican” of Yin-Yang series. It was then I started working with her as a Beta-reader and supported her with some of the non-writing work for her book. It helped me determine to change the gear of my life and work in the direction where my core competency and interest lies. One step in the right direction is way better than walking a mile on the wrong path.
Many times authors chose to self-edit their work. There’s no harm in self-editing if you can look at your work objectively. But it is also true that writing and editing are two different jobs and they require different attributes. An independent editor provides a writer with fresh eyes to go through their draft work, giving them thoughtful feedback about problems they can’t see for themselves. Editing needs an eye to catch the most intricate details and astute observations. As a developmental editor, I work closely with the authors to understand the project, target audience, and the story author wants to convey. Through my editing services I want to strengthen the manuscript I work on and move it to the next stage of the ready to be published book.
I believe writing is a lonely process, in which sometimes the most talented authors also get stuck in doubt, uncertain of their writing –what works and what doesn’t, and get overwhelmed with the never-ending process of getting their work published. And therefore when I engage myself with a work, I stand by the authors, lend them my ear when they want to discuss their work to come out of obscurity and distrust. I want to help the authors by encouraging, inspiring and motivating them to do what they want to do and be Excellent doing it!
